The Teck Whye assocation
Quick – what’s the first word that comes to mind when you hear “Teck Whye”?
Our family and friends have graciously shared their thoughts and honestly, the answers are not surprising.
Words commonly associated with Teck Whye.
Established in 1978, Teck Whye transformed from a humble kampong into a bustling residential town. With over 60 blocks, two LRT stations, and a network of bus services, it’s seamlessly connected to the rest of Singapore.
While the 1990s painted a picture of gang activities and secret societies, those days have faded into history. Since then, the community has blossomed, embracing growth, education and unity despite being marred by its past.
In 2017, a 42-year-old man was arrested for theft and attempted suicide after a five-hour standoff with police at a flat in Teck Whye (Straits Times, 2017). Additionally, in the same year, a 50-year-old male was arrested as a suspected drug trafficker (CNB, 2017). While it is not the cookie-cutter town that Crazy Rich Asians portrayed, Teck Whye really isn’t all that bad.

In fact, my personal experience in Teck whye is nothing like how it’s perceived to be. The overwhelming sense of community among the residents really makes Teck Whye the perfect place for a ‘time out’ from the hustle and bustle of the city life.
Makan Makan & Local Favourites
Eat your heart out at affordable makan spots, traditional snack and fruit shops, and even 2 major supermarket chains available at the Teck Whye Shopping Centre. And if you’re looking for fresh produce and a little banter with vendors – the Teck Whye Wet Market is where to go!
I’ve lost count of the number of kopitiams available around Teck Whye – but trust me, there’s a lot to discover. We’ll do a post on this soon, promise!
Food for the Heart & Body

A leisurely stroll around the area will take you to three religious home grounds. The Tao Bu Keng Temple, Al-Khair Mosque and the Methodist Church of the Incarnation, all within walking distance of each other.
On the same route, you’ll be able to see the CCK Community Centre and the CCK Polyclinic, just across the street.
Scenic Views & Greenery

Explore the various playgrounds in each Teck Whye estate, perfect for families with little kids who need to ‘touch grass’ once in a while (we stan Ms Rachel, but they’ve got to get out sometimes too).
Nature lovers who need a little down time can also head to the Pang Sua Park Connector, which connects to the Rail Corridor.
With over 24,000 residents, Teck Whye, although still known for its notorious past, is also evidently rich with culture, history, community and activities for all walks of life. All it takes is a little romanticising, trust (in us), a sturdy pair of walking shoes – and you’re all set.
If you’re looking for a new location to explore in Singapore – we’ve got you covered. Your weekends are about to get a little more interesting!
