neighbourssayhello: to Dian Nadhirah

Here at neighbourssayhello, our main purpose is to showcase the life that happens in the streets of Teck Whye. What better way to do so than by speaking to the residents themselves? We sat down with Dian Nadhirah, a creative at heart with two businesses under her wing at only 32.

The first, Dinamika Photo Studio, a space for fellow creatives to rent and use for shoots with photography packages. The second, miramika.co, a hijab business that she co-owns with her sister. Both brands are helmed by Dian, straight from the heart of Teck Whye.

A resident of Teck Whye

Being a resident of Teck Whye for over 25 years, Dian shares her experiences and memories living in this people-centric neighbourhood. Her three words to describe Teck Whye are: colourful, accessible and resourceful – especially with the Mondrian-style blocks and various amenities nearby.

“Only in my teenage years did I realise that Teck Whye holds a different meaning to other people,” Dian shares. While the common misconception surrounding Teck Whye is that it’s filled with troubled youth, Dian has fortunately never experienced it throughout her many years in the neighbourhood.

“Everything I need is nearby – the polyclinic, mosque, three supermarkets, my alteration lady and my dentist… they’re all within a 5 minute walk from my block!” Let it also be known that the best bus service in Teck Whye is 190 – connecting residents to Orchard in less than an hour, even with traffic.

Dian took us on a quick tour around Teck Whye Avenue and the Teck Whye Shopping Centre as she captured moments on her camera.

Here are some of Dian’s shots & photography tips:

  1. Let the photo decide the story
The meaning behind photos can sometimes be created after being shot. Find beauty in the ordinary, or the seemingly ‘uninteresting’ subjects.
  2. Be friendly
When it comes to street photography, Dian suggests just being kind and friendly. Subjects will always let you know if they appreciate being shot (or not!).
  3. Consistency is key
It really doesn’t matter if you enjoy taking pictures of cracks on the pavement. 50 cracks in, and you’ll have a consistent portfolio!
  4. Always take a lot of shots
You’ll never know the different stories that can emerge from your subject. So the more, the merrier.
  1. Play with the framing
Framing of subjects within their natural environment brings out an authentic element to your image. Sometimes simple is key!

And as always, remember to say hello!
