KAAAY Family Mart is one of Teck Whye Shopping Centre’s latest additions, having opened just last year. Specialising in halal frozen food options, it is Teck Whye’s only fully halal convenience store. Importing halal goods from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and soon, Dubai – KAAAY Family Mart seeks to “serve the muslim community”, according to the owner, Yusuf. 

Yusuf’s move to Teck Whye after the pandemic was strategic. Retired at 54 and being a community-oriented individual, the natural move for him was to seek out a simple and quiet life for his family.

After seeing a gap in the market (literally), he ventured into this business, wanting to provide the community with halal options without having to travel outside of the neighbourhood.  

Residents of Teck Whye would be familiar with the ageing population in the area. Often, youth would have to travel out for their fix of ‘trending’ dining and product options.

With this in mind, KAAAY Mart partnered with Singapore’s leading halal confectionary brand – SGFR, offering their latest and most popular products in-store. Products range from their well-loved Quench series to gummies and candies. 

“It’s important for us to cater to the needs of everyone in the community, both young and old,” said Yusuf. 

A year on, KAAAY Mart isn’t just a one-stop shop for halal goods, it marks a significant space for those in the community who desire connection through conversations as well. 

“I get regulars who come in to just talk,” Yusuf shares. “They get a drink from the fridge, and if it’s a quiet day – they share their stories, issues, and just hang out, when they can.” 

From KAAAY Mart’s regular updates on TikTok, to the friendly demeanour of Yusuf as you walk into the store – it is clear that intention matters when it comes to business. While some days might be quiet at KAAAY Mart, Yusuf ensures that the store stays open daily for those who may potentially need it. 

When asked regarding the goal for KAAAY Mart in the future, Yusuf hopes for the store to be synonymous with Teck Whye in the next five years. We know, for certain, that this addition to the neighbourhood brings much-needed variety to the community, and we can’t wait for more.
